World Heart Day 2026: Heart Failure Prevention Across the Stages

Heart failure remains an important clinical and public health challenge in Ghana, contributing to recurrent hospitalisation, premature mortality, reduced quality of life and significant costs for patients, families and health services. Many cases are associated with identifiable and modifiable risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, coronary disease, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.

This Continuing Professional Development programme, organised as part of World Heart Day 2026, themed: Don't Miss a Beat, focuses on preventing heart failure before symptoms develop. Participants will explore the contemporary stages of heart failure, with particular emphasis on identifying individuals at risk and recognising pre-heart failure abnormalities. The programme will also examine evidence-based approaches to managing cardiovascular risk factors and preventing progression to symptomatic heart failure.

The programme will further highlight the role of multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation in risk-factor modification, functional recovery, treatment adherence and reducing the risk of deterioration and rehospitalization. Participants will consider practical approaches to integrating prevention, early detection, treatment and rehabilitation across primary, secondary and tertiary care settings in Ghana.

Through focused presentations and a moderated case discussion, healthcare professionals will strengthen their capacity to recognise cardiovascular risk earlier, evaluate high-risk patients appropriately, implement preventive interventions and establish effective referral and rehabilitation pathways.

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND/PARTICIPATE

By the end of the course, healthcare professionals should have a clearer understanding and be equipped to identify cardiovascular risk early, detect pre-heart failure, implement evidence-based prevention, and integrate cardiac rehabilitation into the continuum of care in Ghana.

In addition to comprehensive presentations, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a highly interactive Q&A session, allowing for the clarification of complex topics and the exchange of best practices. Make a date with us and equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions in the prevention of Heart Failure for improved patient outcomes.

Overview

Course Description

Heart failure is an important clinical and public health challenge in Ghana. It contributes to recurrent hospitalization, premature mortality, impaired quality of life and substantial costs for patients, families and health services. Many cases arise from identifiable and modifiable antecedents, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, coronary disease, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.

This World Heart Day programme places prevention before symptoms. It will help participants recognize patients at risk of heart failure, identify pre-heart failure structural or biomarker abnormalities, initiate appropriate interventions, and use multidisciplinary rehabilitation to support long-term cardiovascular health.

What you will learn

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the epidemiology, major causes and health-system burden of heart failure in Ghana.
2. Apply the contemporary stages of heart failure to clinical assessment and prevention.
3. Identify people at risk of heart failure and patients with pre-heart failure before symptoms develop.
4. Initiate evidence-based interventions that reduce progression from Stage A or Stage B to symptomatic heart failure.
5. Explain how cardiac rehabilitation supports risk-factor modification, functional recovery, adherence and prevention of recurrent hospitalization.
6. Evaluate practical approaches for strengthening heart failure prevention across primary, secondary and tertiary care in Ghana.
